Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Strudel leaves
Thin pastry layers that bake up crisp and flaky around the filling.
Spinach
Adds bulk and moisture; sautéing until semidry keeps the filling from soaking the pastry.
Chicken
Provides the protein body of the filling, setting firm as it cooks.
Mushrooms
Add savory, earthy depth and moisture that cooking concentrates.
Egg
Brushed on top, it helps the pastry brown and gives a glossy finish.

The step that matters

Sauté the filling until semidry. Spinach and mushrooms release a lot of water when heated. If the filling stays wet, it will soak into the strudel leaves and stop them from crisping, so cook off the moisture before rolling.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (spinach, mushroom, pepper, onion, garlic, celery, egg):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against spinach, mushroom, pepper, onion, garlic, celery, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
