Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Thaw and squeeze less than a full package of frozen chopped spinach.

  2. Cube 1 cup of mozzarella (about 2 thick slices).

  3. Grate 1/2 cup of Romano or Parmesan cheese.

  4. Grease a small loaf pan (do not flour).

Mix and bake

  1. Mix all of the above ingredients together by hand; do not use a mixer; the mixture will be lumpy.

  2. Pour the batter into the loaf pan.

  3. Bake at 350°F for about 30 to 45 minutes.

  4. Serve hot or cold, sliced to desired thickness.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and help set the loaf structure as it bakes.
Bisquick flour
Provides the starch and structure that give the loaf its body.
Oil
Adds moisture and tenderness to the crumb.
Mozzarella (in the method)
Melts into pockets of stretchy, rich cheese throughout the loaf.
Romano or parmesan cheese (in the method)
Adds salty, savoury flavour and browning at the surface.

The step that matters

Mixing by hand. Overmixing develops gluten and can toughen the loaf, so stir only until combined; the lumpy batter is expected.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, egg):

  1. Arrowrootfits better
  2. Chivefits better
  3. Shallotfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
