Ingredients

Directions

Make the essence

  1. Grate the peel from 4 oranges and place in a jar.

  2. Add half of the vodka, and cover with cellophane.

  3. Keep in a warm place for two weeks.

  4. This will be the essence.

Make the liqueur

  1. Make a syrup out of the sugar and water.

  2. When ready, add half of the strained essence and remove from heat.

  3. Then add the other half of the strained essence, 1/2 qt/0,5 l vodka and the caramelized sugar essence. It is better to filter this through special filter paper.

  4. Bottle the drink and keep in a cool place.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Orange peel
Provides the main citrus aroma and flavour, infused into the vodka over two weeks.
Vodka
Acts as the solvent that extracts flavour from the peel and forms the spirit base.
Sugar
Sweetens the liqueur and gives it body once dissolved into the syrup.

The step that matters

Keep the essence in a warm place for two weeks. Flavour from the peel is extracted slowly by the alcohol, so a shorter steep gives a weak, thin orange character. Warmth speeds extraction, but the jar should stay covered so the alcohol does not evaporate.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, vodka):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Lemonfits better
  3. Limefits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, vodka. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
