Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Zucchini
Provides the bulk and moisture of the casserole once steamed and softened.
Tortillas
Fried and quartered, they soak up sauce and give the casserole body and structure.
Cheddar cheese
Melts into the dish, adding fat, richness and a savory binding texture.
Tomato sauce
Supplies the liquid base and acidity that carries the chili and cumin flavors.
Corn
Adds sweetness and a pop of texture against the soft zucchini and tortillas.
Sour cream
Adds cool creaminess and tang that balances the spice when served on top.

The step that matters

Bake until the cheese has melted and the dish is well heated. Baking only until the casserole is heated through and the cheese melts keeps the zucchini from overcooking and turning watery, while the tortillas stay tender enough to hold together.

Swap the cumin

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (corn, tomato, sauce, pepper, vinegar, cheddar cheese, cream):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Celeryfits better
  4. Cuminthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against corn, tomato, sauce, pepper, vinegar, cheddar cheese, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
