Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Potato
- Adds moisture and a tender crumb to the bread.
- Flour
- Provides the structure that holds the loaves together.
- Egg
- Binds the batter and adds structure as it sets in the oven.
- Baking powder
- Releases gas in the batter so the loaves rise and turn light.
- Orange marmalade
- Adds sweetness, orange flavor, and moisture to the crumb.
- Vegetable oil
- Adds fat for a moist, tender texture.
The step that matters
Stir the batter just until combined. Overmixing develops gluten in the flour, which can make the loaves tough and dense. Stop once the dry ingredients are moistened.
Swap the potato
How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (orange, egg, flour, sugar):
- Arrowrootfits better
- Sweet potatofits better
- Beetrootfits better

Fit is the average pairing score against orange, egg, flour, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
