Why it works: Onion and garlic match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 29,058 recipes. Both carry furaneol, which smells caramel, strawberry. The science ↓

Directions
Prepare the filling
Combine cottage cheese, parsley and chives; set aside.
Heat oil in a 4-quart saucepan.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Cooked chicken
- Provides the main protein and bulk of the filling.
- Cottage cheese
- Adds moisture and a creamy layer that keeps the filling soft after baking.
- Lasagna noodles
- Form the structural layers that hold the filling together.
- Monterey jack cheese
- Melts into the layers for stretch and mild, creamy flavor.
- Salsa
- Supplies moisture, acidity and savory flavor to the sauce layers.
- Onion
- Softens and sweetens as it cooks, building the base flavor.
The step that matters
Let the lasagna stand before cutting. Resting about 15 minutes lets the melted cheese and moisture set, so layers hold their shape when served instead of sliding apart.
