Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to create a tender, aerated batter that holds its structure.
Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure as they are beaten in.
Flour
Provides the main structure of the dough once baked.
Baking soda
Reacts with the batter to produce gas that helps the cake rise.
Baking powder
Adds lift as it releases gas during baking, helping the cake rise.

The step that matters

Push the dough up around the edges to form a crust. The dough must be pressed up evenly to hold the filling in. A thin spot can let the filling leak or burn during baking.
