Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms the bulk of the dish and absorbs the cooking liquid as it softens.
Minced beef
Provides savoury protein and richness that flavours the rice as it cooks.
Onion
Softens and sweetens as it fries, building the base flavour of the sauce.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and moisture that help make a looser, flavourful sauce.
Tomato ketchup
Adds sweetness and tang to the seasoning of the beef.
Pumpkin
Softens during cooking and adds mild sweetness and body to the dish.

The step that matters

Adding the vegetables and meat to nearly tender rice. Adding them too early lets the vegetables break down into mush, while adding them too late leaves them underdone. Gentle mixing keeps the grains intact as the rice finishes absorbing liquid.
