Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bacon
Its rendered fat adds savory flavor to the pan that the soup is built on.
Creamed corn
Provides the main body, sweetness and corn flavor of the soup.
Onion
Softens while cooking to add aromatic sweetness to the base.
Butter
Enriches the milk sauce and adds fat and rich flavor.
Flour
Thickens the butter and milk mixture, giving the soup a smoother, fuller texture.
Milk
Adds creaminess and body, and with the flour forms a thickened sauce.

The step that matters

Stirring the milk into the roux. Adding milk to a flour and butter roux while stirring constantly keeps the mixture smooth. Stopping to stir can let the flour clump and leave lumps in the sauce.
