Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All purpose flour
Provides the main structure that holds the cake's crumb together as it bakes.
Eggs
Add structure and richness, and help bind the batter as it sets.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps the cake brown and keep it moist.
Cocoa
Gives the cake its chocolate flavour and dark colour.
Baking powder
Releases gas as it heats, helping the cake rise and become light.
Vegetable oil
Adds fat that keeps the cake moist and tender after baking.

The step that matters

Stir in boiling water. The water makes the batter very thin on purpose. Adding it last and stirring just until combined keeps the batter smooth, and the thin batter bakes into a moist, tender cake.

Swap the cocoa

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla):

  1. Almondfits better
  2. Chestnutfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
