Ingredients

Directions

Make the dough

  1. Combine crumbs and flour, set aside.

  2. In a saucepan over high heat, heat water, butter, and salt until butter melts and mixture boils.

  3. Remove from heat and quickly stir in crumb mixture, beating vigorously with a wooden spoon until mixture leaves sides of pan in a ball.

  4. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until thoroughly blended.

  5. Chill pan in ice water until cool.

  6. Drop batter on a cookie sheet in six mounds.

Bake and cool

  1. Bake in a preheated 400‑degree oven for about 40 minutes.

  2. Turn the oven off. With a sharp knife, make a small slit in the side of each puff; leave in the oven for 30 more minutes.

  3. Cool. With a sharp knife, cut off the tops of the puffs and fill with strawberry filling.

Fill and serve

  1. Mix whipped topping with three‑quarters of the sliced strawberries. Place the mixture in the bottom of the cream puff shells.

  2. Top with the remaining berries before serving. Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar if desired.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Graham crackers
Provide the crumbs that give the shells a toasty, slightly sweet flavor.
All-purpose flour
Gives the dough structure so the puffs hold their shape while baking.
Eggs
Add structure and moisture, and help the puffs rise and set as they bake.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, tenderizing the shells and adding flavor.
Water
Turns to steam in the hot oven, helping the puffs expand.

The step that matters

Beating in the eggs. Eggs must be added one at a time and fully blended so the dough stays smooth and cohesive. Under-mixed or rushed eggs can leave the batter lumpy or too loose to puff properly.
