Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground pork
Provides the savory meat base that the filling is built around.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid so the meat mixture becomes saucy rather than watery.
Mashed potatoes
Forms the topping that becomes golden and fluffy as it bakes.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aroma as it softens and browns with the meat.
Cooked corn
Adds a sweet pop of flavor and texture between the meat and potato layers.

The step that matters

Thicken the meat mixture before layering. Flour needs to bubble while stirred in liquid to swell and thicken the sauce. If the mixture is not thickened, the filling will run and make the potato topping soggy.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pork, garlic, onion, pepper, flour, corn, potato):

  1. Cuminfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Parsleyfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pork, garlic, onion, pepper, flour, corn, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
