Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground beef
Provides the savory meat base and rich flavor of the filling.
Flour
Thickens the meat mixture with the water so it becomes a sauce rather than watery.
Mashed potatoes
Forms the soft topping that browns in the oven and seals in moisture below.
White onion
Adds sweetness and aroma as it softens and browns with the beef.
Whole-kernel corn
Adds sweetness and a juicy, tender texture between the meat and potatoes.

The step that matters

Stir in the flour and cook until the mixture bubbles and thickens. Flour must be stirred in evenly and heated with the liquid so its starch swells and thickens the filling. Otherwise the filling stays thin or ends up with lumps.
