Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground turkey
Provides the savory meat base that forms the body of the filling.
Flour
Thickens the cooking liquid into a gravy-like filling that holds together.
Mashed potatoes
Forms the creamy topping that bakes into a soft, lightly browned crust.
Cooked whole-kernel corn
Adds sweetness and a juicy layer between the meat and the potatoes.
White onion
Adds aromatic sweetness that deepens as it browns with the meat.

The step that matters

Cook the water and flour mixture until it bubbles and thickens. Flour must be heated until the starch swells and the liquid thickens; stopping early leaves the filling thin and runny, so it won't hold its shape when spooned out.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, garlic, onion, pepper, flour, corn, potato):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against turkey, garlic, onion, pepper, flour, corn, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
