What each ingredient does

Raw eggs
Bind the mixture and set into a custard that holds the pudding together.
Hard boiled eggs
Add body and firmness to the pudding as they are stirred into the custard.
Bread
Soaks up the egg custard and provides the spongy, structured base of the pudding.
Milk
Adds moisture and richness, helping the custard set softly during baking.
Butter
Adds fat that enriches flavour and helps the top brown in the oven.

The step that matters

Bake until the liquid is absorbed. Eggs set as they heat, so underbaking leaves a runny centre while overbaking can make the custard rubbery and dry. Look for a set centre and light browning at the top and edges.
