Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream, whipping
Whipped to stiff peaks, it forms the light, airy body of the parfait.
Marshmallows, miniature
Soften and dissolve slightly into the cream, adding sweetness and a soft, fluffy texture.
Rhubarb sauce, thickened
Adds tart fruit flavour and moisture between the cream layers.
Almonds, whole, toasted
Add a crunchy contrast and a toasted, nutty aroma to the soft layers.

The step that matters

Whipping the cream to stiff peaks. Cream under-whipped stays runny and will not hold its layers, while over-whipped cream turns grainy and can separate. Stop when peaks stand upright and the surface looks smooth.

Swap the rhubarb

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cream, sugar, vanilla, sauce, almond):

  1. Cinnamonfits about as well
  2. Rhubarbthe original
  3. Nutmegfits less well
  4. Capersfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against cream, sugar, vanilla, sauce, almond. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
