Prepare the batter
Preheat the oven to 325 °F (160 °C).
Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat.
Stir in the sugar slowly, ensuring it is completely dissolved.
Stir in the cocoa.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the vanilla.
Stir in the salt and mix until even.
Whisk the eggs together in a separate bowl, then add the whisked eggs to the mixture and stir well.
Add the flour and stir until all of the flour is incorporated and the batter is an even color.
Stir the batter well for at least another 50 strokes.
Bake
Pour the batter into an 8 × 8‑inch pan lined with aluminum foil, leaving plenty of overhang on both sides.
Bake for about 26 minutes, varying with pan type and oven.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Eggs
- Bind the batter and add structure as they set during baking.
- Flour
- Provides structure so the batter sets into a cohesive, cuttable crumb.
- Unsalted butter
- Adds fat for a moist, tender texture and rich flavor.
- Sugar
- Sweetens the batter and contributes to a glossy, fudgy texture.
- Cocoa
- Supplies the chocolate flavor and deep color of the brownies.
The step that matters
Stirring the batter after adding the flour. Stirring develops gluten in the flour, which firms the texture. Stirring the batter well for at least another 50 strokes is part of the method, and overmixing can make brownies tough and cakey rather than fudgy.
