Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground pork
Provides the main body and rich flavor of the meatballs.
Egg
Binds the meat and crumbs so the meatballs hold their shape.
Corn flakes
Add crumb that soaks up moisture, keeping the meatballs tender.
Ketchup
Adds acidity and moisture to the mixture and forms the glaze.
Brown sugar
Caramelizes in the oven, promoting browning and a sticky glaze.

The step that matters

Coat and bake the glaze. The sugar in the ketchup and brown sugar caramelizes and browns in the oven. Too little baking leaves the glaze pale and sticky, while too long can scorch the sugars and dry the meatballs.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pork, corn, pepper, egg, ketchup, sugar, mustard):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Horseradishfits better
  3. Shallotfits better
