Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Form the bulk of the hash and give it a soft, starchy body.
Corned beef
Provides the savory, salty meat flavor that defines the hash.
Eggs
Set during baking to form soft cooked pools that hold the hash together.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness, keeping the hash and eggs tender as they bake.
Butter
Adds fat and richness and helps the top brown in the oven.

The step that matters

Baking the eggs at the second temperature. Eggs continue to cook from residual heat, so pulling them when the whites are just set and yolks still soft keeps them tender. Overbaking turns the yolks chalky and dry.

Swap the onion
