Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Basmati rice
Forms the fluffy, separate grains that make up the body of the pilaf.
Onion
Builds sweetness and savory depth as it softens and browns in the fat.
Carrots
Add sweetness and a tender texture that blends with the rice.
Butter
Adds richness and flavor to the fat used for frying the aromatics.
Vegetable oil
Carries heat evenly for browning the onions and toasting the spices.

The step that matters

Cook, stirring very gently, for 5 minutes after adding the rice. Rice grains are fragile and coated in fat; gentle stirring toasts them without breaking the grains, which would release starch and make the pilaf gummy.

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (basmati rice, onion, carrot, cumin, butter):

  1. Turmericfits better
