Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and meaty bulk of the casserole.
Cream of chicken soup
Adds moisture and a creamy, binding sauce around the chicken.
Cream of celery soup
Adds savory depth and extra creaminess to the sauce.
Sour cream
Adds tang and richness, keeping the filling moist and smooth.
Buttery crackers
Form a crisp, golden layer top and bottom while absorbing some moisture.
Butter
Adds richness and promotes browning on the crackers.

The step that matters

Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces. Cooking the chicken fully before baking keeps it tender; pieces sized evenly also heat through at the same rate in the sauce, so no bites stay dry or underdone.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, cream, butter):
