Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Raw rice
Absorbs liquid from the soup and tomatoes as it bakes, becoming the tender body of the casserole.
Creamy chicken mushroom soup
Provides moisture and a creamy sauce that binds the rice and shrimp together.
Shrimp
Supplies the main protein, which cooks through in the oven and firms up in the sauce.
Oleo
Fat that sautés the onion, bell pepper and shrimp, carrying flavor into the dish.
Tomatoes with green chilies
Adds acidity and a mild heat that brightens the creamy sauce.

The step that matters

Keep the casserole covered for the first bake. Covering with foil traps steam so the raw rice can absorb the liquid and cook through. Uncovered, the surface dries and the rice can stay firm in the middle.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, onion, rice, chicken, mushroom, tomato, shrimp):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Celeryfits better
  4. Parsleythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, onion, rice, chicken, mushroom, tomato, shrimp. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
