Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Soften into tender pieces that give the soup its hearty body.
Ground beef
Provides savory, meaty flavor and rich fat that carries the soup's taste.
Mushrooms
Add earthy, savory depth and a tender, meaty bite.
All-purpose flour
Starch thickens the liquid into a smooth, cohesive soup.
Milk
Adds creaminess and softens the soup's overall richness.
Process cheese
Melts into a smooth, creamy, cheesy body that binds the soup.

The step that matters

Whisking the flour into milk before adding it. Flour dropped directly into hot liquid clumps. Whisking it smooth into cold milk first lets the starch disperse evenly, and boiling it for two minutes fully thickens the soup.
