What each ingredient does

French bread
Provides the crusty, chewy base that holds the butter filling between its slices.
Butter
Adds fat and moisture that carries the herbs and garlic and helps the bread brown.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savory, salty flavor and helps the topping brown as it heats.
Garlic
Supplies the main pungent aroma and flavor of the bread.
