What each ingredient does

Homemade cake mix
Its flour and starch set into the crumb that gives the cake its structure.
Eggs
They bind the batter and set during baking, adding structure and richness.
Butter
Its fat tenderizes the crumb and adds flavor.
Milk
It hydrates the dry mix and adds moisture to the batter.

The step that matters

Check for doneness before removing the cake. Cake keeps setting from residual heat after it leaves the oven, so overbaking dries out the crumb. Test for a light spring-back in the center and pulling away from the pan edges rather than relying only on the time range.
