Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All purpose flour
Provides the structure that sets the cake's crumb as it bakes.
Egg
Binds the batter and helps give the cake its structure and richness.
Butter
Adds fat for tenderness and flavor in the creamed base.
Sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps hold moisture in the crumb.
Cooking apples
Add moisture and tart fruit flavor that bakes into the cake.

The step that matters

Beat on low speed until smooth. Once flour is added, overbeating develops gluten and can make the cake tough and dense, so mix only until smooth.
