Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Asparagus
Forms the main body of the dish, cooked tender in boiling salted water.
Butter
Adds richness and, when cooked until lightly browned, a nutty aroma.
Parmesan cheese
Adds salty, savoury flavour and clings to the spears when mixed with the butter.

The step that matters

Cooking the butter until lightly browned. Butter is mostly water and milk solids. Over low heat the water evaporates and the milk solids toast, giving nutty flavour. Too much heat or too long burns them, leaving a bitter taste.
