Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batters and add structure as they set during baking.
Cream cheese
Creates a dense, creamy layer that contrasts with the fudgy chocolate batter.
Unsweetened chocolate
Provides deep chocolate flavor and a rich, fudgy texture.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and a tender, moist crumb.
Sugar
Sweetens the batter and helps give the brownies a moist, glossy texture.
All-purpose flour
Provides structure so the batter holds together as it bakes.

The step that matters

Swirl the layers gently. Cutting through the layers lightly, rather than stirring them fully together, keeps the cream cheese and chocolate as distinct swirls. Overmixing blends them into a uniform color and loses the marbled look.
