Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Fresh tomatoes
Provide the bulk and juice that moistens the layered casserole as it bakes.
Fresh soft breadcrumbs
Form a crumb topping that absorbs juices and browns in the oven.
Butter
Adds richness and flavor to the onion and helps the crumbs brown.
Olive oil
Adds fat that carries flavor and helps the topping brown.

The step that matters

Uncover for the final bake. Covering traps steam so the crumbs stay soft; uncovering lets moisture escape and the breadcrumb topping brown and crisp.

Flavor stand-ins for the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, parsley, sauce, tomato, olive):

  1. Capsicumbetter flavor fit
  2. Eggplantbetter flavor fit
  3. Potatobetter flavor fit
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, parsley, sauce, tomato, olive. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
