What each ingredient does

Chicken breast
Provides the main protein, which firms and turns opaque as it cooks through.
Flour
Coats the chicken, helping it brown and giving the sauce a little body.
Whipping cream
Forms the rich base of the sauce and thickens as it simmers.
Parmesan cheese
Adds salty, savory flavor and helps the sauce thicken and cling.
Garlic
Contributes aroma and savory flavor when softened in the oil.
Olive oil
Carries heat for browning the chicken and sautéing the aromatics.

The step that matters

Cooking the chicken in the skillet. Searing until golden builds browning flavor, but the chicken is only partly cooked before baking. Stopping at the thermometer reading of 180°F, not just the timer, keeps it safely cooked without drying it out.
