All-day-long Crockpot Beef

Time7-9 hours

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare

  1. Cut beef roast into serving-sized portions. Use more beef if you need more than 6 servings.

  2. Brown beef in a bit of vegetable oil, although you can skip this step if rushed for time.

  3. Slice onion and separate into rings. Dice the peeled carrots, dice the celery and slice the peppers into thin strips or circles.

Assemble and cook

  1. Place these into bottom of crockpot. Sprinkle the beef pieces with fresh ground black pepper, minced garlic and the onion soup mix. Place on top of the vegetables.

  2. Mix the steak sauce and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl with about ½ cup water and ½ cup tomato juice. Pour this over the meat.

  3. Turn the crockpot to high for 30 minutes, or, if you're in a hurry, skip this step. Turn to low, cover and cook for 7-9 hours. Keep the crockpot covered as much as possible throughout cooking time.

  4. A crockpot can be used to cook this type of meal for a varied amount of time, depending on your schedule. It is not important that you take the meat and vegetables out at a specific amount of time. One or two hours either way usually makes no difference.

Serve

  1. When ready to serve, dip meat and vegetables out of pot with a slotted spoon; use the liquid as is or turn crockpot to high and thicken liquid with a little flour or cornstarch.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef roast
Provides the main protein, which becomes tender through long, slow cooking.
Onion soup mix
Adds savoury, salty seasoning that flavours the beef and the cooking liquid.
Tomato juice
Adds acidity and liquid that helps build the sauce around the meat.
Carrots
Add sweetness and body to the dish as they soften in the cooking liquid.
Celery
Adds savoury flavour and a tender texture after slow cooking.

The step that matters

Browning the beef. Searing meat creates browned flavour through the Maillard reaction, which adds depth that slow cooking alone does not produce. Skipping it gives a paler, milder result.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, garlic, onion, sauce, carrot, celery):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Cuminfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, garlic, onion, sauce, carrot, celery. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
