Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Brown rice
Forms the bulk of the casserole and gives it a chewy, hearty texture.
Cauliflower
Provides the main vegetable body and moisture that cooks into the casserole.
Mushrooms
Release moisture and savoury flavour as they cook in butter.
Cheddar cheese
Melts to bind the casserole and browns on top for flavour.
Butter
Adds fat and richness while softening the onions and mushrooms.
Onion
Adds sweetness and aroma as it softens and browns in butter.

The step that matters

Sautéing the onions, mushrooms and garlic. Cook them until tender but not soft. Overcooking releases too much moisture, which can make the casserole watery, while undercooked vegetables stay raw and sharp.
