Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creams with sugar to trap air, giving the cake its tender, rich body.
Sugar
Beaten with butter to aerate the batter and add sweetness and softness.
Eggs
Add structure and richness, setting the crumb as the cake bakes.
Whipping cream
Adds moisture and fat, keeping the crumb soft and rich.
Flour
Forms the cake's structure as its proteins set during baking.

The step that matters

Beating the sugar into the butter for 10 minutes. Long creaming dissolves sugar and traps air in the fat, which gives the cake its lift and fine, even crumb. Stopping early leaves a denser cake.

Swap the vanilla

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, egg, cream, flour):

  1. Vanillathe original
  2. Raisinfits about as well
  3. Coconutfits less well
  4. Figfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, egg, cream, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
