Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Boneless chicken breasts
Provides the main protein, browned in oil to develop flavour before simmering.
Tomato soup
Forms the sauce base, adding moisture, tomato flavour and body as it heats.
Vegetables
Add texture and bulk, softening to tender-crisp while staying slightly firm.
Soy sauce
Adds salty, savoury depth that rounds out the tomato sauce.
Garlic
Contributes aroma and savoury flavour to the vegetables and sauce.

The step that matters

Brown the chicken before adding the sauce. Searing chicken in hot oil creates browned, savoury flavour through the Maillard reaction. Crowding the pan or stirring too little causes steaming, leaving the chicken pale and less flavourful.

Flavor stand-ins for the garlic

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, tomato, sauce, vinegar, rice):

  1. Garlicthe original
  2. Tarragonabout as good a flavor fit

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, tomato, sauce, vinegar, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
