Why it works: Pork and beef match in chemistry and in kitchens. They rank in the top 1% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 5,690 recipes. Both carry 12-methyltridecanal, which smells tallowy, beefy. The science ↓

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Pork chops
- Provide the main protein, which firms and cooks through during the covered bake.
- Long-grain rice
- Absorbs the bouillon liquid and forms the starchy base of the dish.
- Beef bouillon cubes
- Supply the salty, savory liquid that flavors the rice as it cooks.
- Butter or margarine
- Adds fat for browning the chops and carrying flavor from the pan.
- Tomatoes
- Add moisture and acidity that brighten the savory rice and chops.
The step that matters
Cook the rice for only half the package time. The rice finishes cooking in the oven, so starting it fully cooked would leave it mushy. Partial cooking lets it absorb the remaining liquid gently while the chops bake.
Swap the lemon
