Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Binds the meat and crumbs together so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Bread crumbs
Absorb juices and keep the loaf moist and tender rather than dense.
Lean ground beef
Provides the main meaty structure and protein that sets as the loaf cooks.
Italian sausage
Adds fat and seasoning, keeping the loaf juicier and more flavorful than beef alone.
Tomato sauce
Adds moisture and acidity, and its surface layer browns and glazes as it bakes.

The step that matters

Checking for doneness in the center. Ground meat mixtures can look cooked outside while the center is still pink. Cooking until no pink remains, with the center reaching a safe internal temperature, ensures the meat is fully cooked through.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, beef, bread, tomato, sauce, pepper):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
  3. Spinachfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, beef, bread, tomato, sauce, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
