Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Baking potatoes
Starchy flesh that becomes fluffy inside while the outside crisps in the oven.
Oil
Coats the potato strips, helping them brown and crisp rather than dry out.
Seasoned coating mix
Its seasoning and starch coat the strips, adding flavour and some browning and crispness.
Water
Helps the oil and seasonings spread evenly over the potato strips.

The step that matters

Toss the potatoes until evenly coated. Uncoated spots dry out and stay pale, while thick clusters of coating can turn gummy. Even, thin coating gives the most even browning and crispness.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sauce, onion, garlic, chicken):

  1. Tomatofits about as well
  2. Potatothe original
  3. Chivefits about as well
  4. Okrafits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against sauce, onion, garlic, chicken. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
