Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein, which cooks through and turns tender during baking.
Flour
Coats the chicken, helping the skin crisp and brown in the oven.
Butter
Adds fat that helps the coating brown and gives richer flavor.
Paprika
Adds color and mild sweet flavor to the seasoned coating.

The step that matters

Turn meat and reduce heat to 325 °F.. Lowering the heat after the initial high-temperature bake lets the chicken cook through gently, so the outside does not burn before the inside is done.

Swap the garlic

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, flour, pepper, butter):

  1. Parsleyfits about as well
  2. Thymefits about as well
  3. Turmericfits about as well
  4. Garlicthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, flour, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
