Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All-purpose flour
Provides the structure that holds the cake's crumb together as it bakes.
Eggs
Add structure and richness, helping the batter set and bind as it bakes.
Butter
Adds fat for tenderness and flavor in the crumb.
Baking powder
Releases gas during baking, lifting the batter so the cake rises.
Rumchata liqueur
Adds liquid for moisture and a creamy, spiced flavor.
Granulated sugar
Sweetens the cake and helps keep the crumb tender and moist.

The step that matters

Beat the eggs in gently. Once the eggs are added, overbeating develops too much gluten and can make the cake dense and tough, so mix only until combined.

Swap the vanilla

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, egg):

  1. Raisinfits better
  2. Vanillathe original
  3. Figfits less well
  4. Lemonfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, sugar, butter, egg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
