Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure and lift as the brownies set.
Butter
Adds fat for a rich, tender crumb and moisture.
Sugar
Adds sweetness and helps give the brownies a moist, chewy texture.
Cocoa powder
Provides the chocolate flavour and deep colour.
Flour
Gives the batter body so the brownies hold their shape.

The step that matters

Allow to cool before cutting into squares.. Brownies are still soft and set as they cool, so cutting them while hot can make them crumble or smear. Letting them cool fully lets the structure firm up for clean squares.
