Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter or margarine
Creams with sugar to trap air and adds richness and tender texture.
White granulated sugar
Sweetens the batter and helps create a crisp, fudgy crust when creamed.
Eggs
Bind the batter and set during baking to give structure.
Cocoa powder
Provides chocolate flavor and deep color.
Flour
Provides the structure that holds the brownie together as it sets.
Milk
Adds moisture and helps dissolve sugar into the batter.

The step that matters

Bake for 28–30 minutes. Overbaking dries out brownies and makes them cakey, while underbaking leaves them gummy. A toothpick with only moist crumbs shows the centre is set without drying.

Swap the almond

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, milk, egg, cocoa powder, flour, vanilla):

  1. Almondthe original
  2. Hazelnutfits about as well
  3. Cocoafits less well
  4. Chestnutfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, milk, egg, cocoa powder, flour, vanilla. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
