Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Break down during long cooking to thicken the soup and give it body.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, rounding out the flavor and mouthfeel of the soup.
Evaporated milk
Adds creaminess and body to the soup without extra water.
Onions
Release sweetness and savory depth as they cook slowly.

The step that matters

Add the evaporated milk at the end. Evaporated milk is a concentrated dairy product that can curdle or separate if boiled for a long time. Adding it when the soup is done and only reheating it keeps the texture smooth and creamy.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (potato, onion, parsley, pepper, chicken, butter, evaporated milk):
