Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Raisins
Add chewy texture and natural sweetness, softened by warming in the orange juice.
Butter
Provides fat for a tender crumb and rich flavour.
Cream cheese
Adds moisture and a dense, tender texture to the batter.
Eggs
Bind the batter and help set the structure as the cake bakes.
All-purpose flour
Forms the cake's structure once mixed with the wet ingredients.
Baking powder
Releases gas during baking so the cake rises.

The step that matters

Check doneness at 60 minutes. A long, low bake can dry out or leave the centre underbaked. Testing with a skewer shows whether the centre is set before the cake overcooks.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (raisin, butter, cream cheese, sugar, egg, flour, nutmeg):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Lemonfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against raisin, butter, cream cheese, sugar, egg, flour, nutmeg. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
