Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

All-purpose flour
Cooks with the fat to form a roux that thickens and gives the halva its body.
Butter or margarine
Provides fat that coats the flour and carries flavour through the cooking.
Granulated sugar
Dissolves into water to form the syrup that sweetens and moistens the halva.

The step that matters

Cooking the flour until golden brown. Flour cooked in fat must be stirred over gentle heat to toast evenly. Too much heat can scorch it before it browns, leaving a bitter taste, while too little leaves the raw flour flavour behind.
