Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken wings
Form the main body of the dish, and their skin crisps when fried.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the sauce cling to the wings.
Hot sauce
Provides the sharp, acidic heat that defines the flavor.
Garlic
Adds pungent aroma to the sauce.
Soy sauce
Adds savory depth to the sauce.

The step that matters

Fry wings in batches. Adding too many wings at once drops the oil temperature, so the wings absorb more oil, turn soggy, and end up greasy instead of crisp.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sauce, garlic, chicken, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Tarragonfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sauce, garlic, chicken, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
