Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the mixture and help the loaf hold its shape as it sets.
Bread
Soaks up milk and juices, keeping the meatloaf moist and tender.
Ground beef
Forms the main body of the loaf and provides its savory, meaty flavor.
Milk
Adds moisture to the bread and meat mixture for a softer texture.
Parmesan cheese
Adds savory, salty flavor and helps bind the mixture.
Onion
Adds moisture and sweetness that deepens as it cooks.

The step that matters

Form the loaf no more than 3 inches high. A loaf that is too tall cooks unevenly, leaving the center underdone while the outside dries out. Keeping it low lets heat reach the middle more evenly.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (wheat, bread, egg, onion, milk, parmesan cheese, mustard):

  1. Capersfits better
  2. Garlicfits better
  3. Celeryfits better
  4. Parsleythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against wheat, bread, egg, onion, milk, parmesan cheese, mustard. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
