Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Uncooked medium grain rice
Starch that absorbs the broth and releases starch, giving the risotto its body and creaminess.
Chicken broth
Liquid that hydrates and cooks the rice while adding savory flavor.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, contributing flavor and a smoother texture.
Olive oil
Fat that coats the grains so they cook more evenly and stay separate at the start.
Yellow onion
Softens as it cooks, adding a sweet, aromatic base to the dish.

The step that matters

Pour in simmering broth. Adding hot liquid keeps the rice cooking steadily. Cold broth would cool the dish and slow starch release, leaving the texture uneven.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, butter, olive, rice):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits better

  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, butter, olive, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
