Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Smoked bacon
Adds smoky, salty flavor and fat for sautéing the vegetables.
Shrimp
Provides the main protein, turning pink and tender when cooked briefly.
Grits
Forms the creamy base that the cheese and shrimp are served over.
Sharp cheddar cheese
Melts into the grits, adding richness and savory flavor.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, helping the grits become smooth and silky.
Sweet onion
Softens and turns sweet when sautéed, balancing the savory dish.

The step that matters

Sauté the shrimp until they turn pink. Shrimp cook very quickly; overcooking makes the proteins contract and turn rubbery, so they should be removed as soon as they turn pink and opaque.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (shrimp, cheddar cheese, butter, onion, pepper, garlic, sauce):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Capersfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Clovethe original
