Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground beef substitute
Provides the meaty texture of the filling, and browns slightly as the water cooks off.
Onions
Browning softens them and develops a sweet, savoury base for the filling.
Garlic
Adds a pungent aroma that deepens as it cooks briefly with the spices.
Chilli powder
Supplies the core chilli flavour and warmth of the filling.
Paprika
Adds mild sweetness, colour, and smoky depth to the seasoning.
Flour tortillas
Form the soft wrapper, and light browning in a pan adds structure and flavour.

The step that matters

Cook the filling until most of the water is gone. Simmering evaporates the liquid so the crumbles can brown slightly and the seasoning concentrates. Stopping early leaves a wet filling that makes tortillas soggy, while cooking too long dries it out.

Flavor stand-ins for the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, garlic, pepper, beef, flour):

  1. Cuminbetter flavor fit
  2. Turmericbetter flavor fit
  3. Parsleybetter flavor fit
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, garlic, pepper, beef, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
