Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Soften and release juices that moisten and flavour the baked topping and toast.
Breadcrumbs
Absorb moisture and help form a light, golden crust on top of the tomatoes.
Hard cheese
Melts and browns on the surface, adding savoury flavour and a golden finish.
Wholemeal bread
Provides a toasted base that soaks up the tomato juices and adds a nutty flavour.

The step that matters

Adding the breadcrumbs and cheese. Adding them too early lets them burn before the tomatoes are cooked, while adding them after the first bake lets them toast to a golden crust without scorching.

Swap the chive

The recipe marks chive as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, cherry tomato, cheese, bread, pepper):
